Your mom lives alone, and you stop by as much as you can. But, you recently received a promotion that’s going to require you to move to another state. It’s too good an opportunity to pass up, but she refuses to move with you. How can you provide the emotional support she needs when she lives alone?
Caregivers Can Stop By to Check In
An in-home care agency can send caregivers to check on your mom each week. Her caregiver can take her shopping, make sure she has enough food, and verify that her electricity, heat, or cooling are all working properly. If there are issues, your mom’s aide will call you or schedule repair services.
Your Mom Won’t Forget Her Medications
Your mom’s caregiver can remind her when it’s time to take her pills. If she needs to take them with a meal or on an empty stomach, she has a caregiver to remind her what is needed and make sure she has the meal ready, if needed.
When refills are needed, your mom’s caregiver can arrange them or help her make the arrangements. As some pharmacies use online ordering systems or automated phone systems, your mom may appreciate having the help.
Her Home is Clean and Organized
Your mom’s caregiver can clean and organize her home, and your mom is welcome to help out if she wants. She may find it helpful to have someone to clean with. They can put on music and start tackling household cleaning chores. With in-home care, carpets are vacuumed, tile floors are swept, and wood floors are mopped with a dust pad to collect pet hair, crumbs, and dust.
Caregivers can dust furniture, take out the trash, sanitize counters and other cooking surfaces, and wipe out sinks. After a meal, your mom’s aide can wash the dishes or load the dishwasher, run a wash cycle if needed, and put clean and dry dishes away. When your mom wants to do something on her own, she’s welcome to.
Companionship Visits
Your mom may still do many things independently. She simply wants a caregiver to stop by for weekly conversations. Companionship visits are also available. Your mom has a caregiver to walk with, help her in the gardens, go shopping together, or plan a picnic outing as a treat.
With companionship visits, your mom can go to a museum without having to go by herself. She’ll have company on rainy days when she feels like playing Scrabble or another of her favorite board games, or they can make popcorn and watch your mom’s favorite movie.
What’s important now is that you make sure you’re not giving up opportunities that you don’t want to miss. Long-distance family caregivers can make it work by pairing with in-home care aides. Call an agency to learn more about all that in-home care offers aging adults who live alone.
