Sitting down with your elderly family member and talking about her goals for the immediate future is something that can help both of you to feel more connected. More importantly, this one question can help you to make sure you’re giving her the support that she needs and wants in order to meet those goals.
Managing Pain Effectively
If your elderly family member experiences pain in her daily life, then managing that pain well and effectively is likely one of her biggest goals. Working with her medical team to find the best solutions, both medically and through lifestyle changes, is definitely in order. Find out what else you can do to help support her with this set of goals.
Socializing on Her Own Terms
Being able to spend time with the people that your senior cares about is important, both because that’s what she wants and because it supports positive mental health. Work with your elderly family member and with the people she cares about to determine how she can spend time with the people she loves. This may be more difficult with people who live farther away, of course, but there may be other solutions, like video calling.
Controlling Her Daily Activities
Being told what to do and when to do it doesn’t sit well with most people, but it likely really doesn’t sit well with your senior. Be sure to offer her all of the choices that you can, for as long as you can. One of her goals may involve being able to continue to have a say in her daily activities for a very long time. You can help her to do that, even if she is in a situation in which she needs a lot of help.
Aging in Place
Aging in place is a huge goal for a lot of older adults. This means that she wants to continue to live in her home, on her own terms, for as long as she’s able to do so. That could be something that’s easily achievable for a very long time, but she could still experience health challenges that make that difficult. Look for ways to support that goal, like bringing in elderly care providers to handle tasks for her.
Checking in with your senior about her goals every now and then helps to make sure you’re both on the same page. When you know and understand what she wants from her life, you can take steps to support those goals more fully.
