Mission Possible: Extraordinary Living

 

Mission Possible. As individuals begin their senior years, the common mistake is to assume the best years are behind. Is it really possible for live to be more fulfilling and extraordinary as one grows older? As the senior population grows, there are many options for seniors to have fulfilling, vibrant and fresh lives, filled with new memories and experiences. Instead of resigning to mundane existence, it can be positive to create new habits and activities in the senior y…ears. It is never to late to creating healthy, positive habits. In the next few posts, we will share some ideas.

 

Mission #1 – Stay physically active. Exercise not only increases energy but improves memory and alleviates depression. Short strolls, long walks or an exercise program approved by a physician, can keep seniors healthier longer. Find out if there are senior exercise or wellness classes in your community.

 

Mission #2 – Find ways to spend more time with friends, children and grandchildren. One benefit to retirement is having the time to spend with others that you did not have when you were working and raising children. Now is the time to enjoy the free time you always looked forward to, when you were younger. Find senior community events and activities that provide opportunities to create new memories and friends.

 

Mission #3 – Creative hobbies. When it’s too hot to go outside, you can take advantage of that time to keep your mind sharp by doing crossword puzzles, read, write, and try new hobbies to stimulate their minds and engage with the world around them. Activities like these can ward off a decline in mental health. One innovative idea is to begin writing your story to be passed down to your loved ones.

 

Mission #4 – Stay active.  If physical health maintained, seniors can do more and stay active, which is important to their overall well-being. However, this requires routine annual physicals, focus on prevention, medication management, healthy eating and sufficient sleep.

 

Mission #5 – Find common ground. Try to find new activities that you can do with your children or grandchildren, they they are interested in. Find out what they like to do. You might surprise yourself how quickly you pick it up and enjoy doing something new. Something you thought was just for the younger generation. It creates new memories and enlarges common ground in relationships. Learning new concepts and activities also helps maintain mental sharpness.
