Continuing our topic of “Fall Prevention.” Firstly, according to the Center for Disease Control, 1 out of every 5 falls results in a serious injury such as fractures and head injuries. It doesn’t matter who we are, anyone can fall. We are more susceptible to falling however, as we grow older. Some factors that influence this are: our vision changes, we lose muscle strength and our reflexes weaken and our reaction times slow down. What is Fall “Prevention”? How can we prevent falls? Some basics are to have your vision and your hearing checked on a regular basis as these can change quickly. We want to exercise to keep our muscles moving and to gain strength. Wear shoes that fit well and have a nonskid soul. If you like to wear sox around the house and have wood or tile floors, make sure that you wear socks with the rubber dots on the bottom. These can be purchased at almost any type of store. Make three little words your catch phrase- “Off The Floor”. This means shoes, purses, towels, clothing, anything that we could easily trip on. Make sure that electric cords are behind furniture for lamps, fans and such. Be aware of your surroundings and be smart. Next time we’ll talk about how to prevent falls in our bathrooms.
